Photography Tips for Your Day at Gate Street Barn
Gate Street Barn offers so many beautiful backdrops, and with a little planning, you can make the most of its stunning Surrey countryside setting. Here are a few tips from my experience photographing weddings at this venue:
1. The best time for couple portraits
The venue is surrounded by the rolling Surrey Hills, making it perfect for golden hour portraits. About an hour before sunset, the light softens beautifully over the fields and gardens, creating that warm, romantic glow that looks incredible in photos. If your wedding day timeline allows, I always recommend stepping out for 10–15 minutes during this time for relaxed, natural portraits.
2. Rain-backup plan
One of the great things about Gate Street Barn is that it works beautifully in any weather. The main barn, Orangery, and Pheasantry are all connected, so guests can move comfortably between spaces without stepping outside. There are also plenty of sheltered areas for couple portraits, allowing us to capture warm, atmospheric images even if it rains.
If you’re planning your table layout for the wedding breakfast, I recommend leaving the conservatory space on the left side of the barn free of tables. This area works perfectly for family group photos. If the weather keeps us indoors, it has lovely natural light and enough space to arrange everyone comfortably.
3. Large guest list logistics
Gate Street Barn can comfortably host up to around 150–200 guests, which means plenty of energy and celebration throughout the day. For family and group photos, I usually recommend using the courtyard or garden area, depending on the light. These open spaces allow everyone to gather easily without disrupting the flow of the day.
